San Ysidro Feed and Supply

109 San Ysidro Blvd. — San Ysidro Feed and Supply

Joseph and Virginia left Arizona and first settled in Tijuana where Joseph found work at a bakery. However, he wanted to find work in the United States and landed a job at Ryder & Sons Feed Store in Chula Vista. Virginia became “Rosie the Riveter” for Convair Aircraft. They bought a house along San Ysidro Boulevard and built three homes in the backyard.

In 1940, Joseph and Virginia Cuen bought the feed store next to their home. Thereafter, they owned the only feed store 50 miles in any direction and served wealthy ranch owners in San Ysidro and the Tijuana River Valley. The Cuens’ entire property contained three to four acres and included horses, cows, and rabbits.

I stop by there once a month to get feed for my pigeons, I used to by my pigeon feed from them as a kid in the early 70’s…when they were close to the tunnel that went under I-5.
